homage: all we are saying…
April 1, 2008
The Illustration Friday theme this week is “Homage.”
I’d like to pay homage to John Lennon 1940-1980, peace activist, artist, husband, father, Beatle and someone I considered a hero.
In 1969, during the Vietnam War, John Lennon and Yoko Ono held 2, week-long Bed-Ins for Peace, in Amsterdam and Montreal, as a way to non-violently protest the war and promote peace.
There were a lot of people who dismissed him because he thought peace might be a good idea. But there were and still are a lot more of us who agree and still sing his music at the top of our lungs.
IMAGINE
by John LennonImagine there’s no heaven
It’s easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today…Imagine there’s no countries
It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace…You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will be as oneImagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world…You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will live as one

A lovely drawing and sentiment. I often quote his words to myself, “Life is what happens to you when you’re busy making other plans”

This has always been one of my favorite songs. It has so much depth and meaning. This message is just as strongly needed today as it was then. Maybe one day we’ll get it right?
Your tribute sketch is wonderful!!

I can’t help but wonder… did they stay in bed the whole time? or did they get up to take a shower occassionally?

Perfect, perfect tribute. I remember the day he was killed. It was bone chilling to know we’d never hear him live again or to hear the music he had yet to write. What a legacy he’s left though! Wonderful homage Sketch 😉
I don’t know if you follow American Idol or not. (Shamefully, I do!) Okay, I’m not really ashamed, just old! Anyhoodle, David Archuletta did a fabulous rendition of this song. If I can find it I’ll email it to you!

Just awesome. I don’t have to tell you what a fan I am.
It’s worth mentioning here that John wanted peace but also he wanted some truth. As he said:
Im sick and tired of hearing things
From uptight, short-sighted, narrow-minded hypocritics
All I want is the truth
Just gimme some truth
Ive had enough of reading things
By neurotic, psychotic, pig-headed politicians
All I want is the truth
Just gimme some truth
I’m sick to death of seeing things
From tight-lipped, condescending, mamas little chauvinists
All I want is the truth
Just gimme some truth now
Ive had enough of watching scenes
Of schizophrenic, ego-centric, paranoiac, prima-donnas
All I want is the truth now
Just gimme some truth
No short-haired, yellow-bellied, son of tricky dicky
Is gonna mother hubbard soft soap me
With just a pocketful of hope
Money for dope
Money for rope
