enough

The Illustration Friday theme this week is “Enough.”

……………………………………………………………………..

So I must confess, I carry with me, at all times, a ginormous purse. I could say it’s a fashion statement, big purses being quite popular right now, but that would be a lie. This monstrosity is filled to capacity with “necessities”, so it can never be big enough!

If you dared, or I should say cared to peer inside, you would find the usual, cell phone, makeup, keys, assorted papers and no less than three pairs of glasses (a whole other story). Peering deeper into the bowels of this suitcase of a purse, you would also find empty gum wrappers, dried up pens, lint, cracker crumbs, wadded up tissues, half-read novels, socks, expired coupons, outdated coffee shop cards, unpaid bills, long forgotten to-do lists, and on the odd occasion, half a sandwich. The list goes on.

In short, my purse is a black hole from which the gravitational pull renders all light and matter unable to escape.

Now the real absurdity reveals itself whenever I need to access any of the things I’ve been schlepping around all day. I can seldom, if ever, simply reach in and pull out a particular item. No, I rummage around for about fifteen minutes or more, sighing impatiently. After which I have to dump the entire contents of the purse out, pile it up beside me, and pick through it as adroitly as an archaeologist on a dig.

This, of course, is not only annoying to myself, but anyone I happen to be with at the time. Especially when my house or car keys are the desired target. Not finding keys in a timely fashion often determines whether or not you and the person you are carpooling with (my husband Tom) get to work on time. It can also determine whether you easily enter your house or bash in a window. The ill will created by window bashing is worsened greatly when said keys are later found right where they belong… in your purse.

I’ve tried carrying smaller bags in an effort to pair down. But this only results in, you guessed it, a smaller, overstuffed purse. A much worse situation, I assure you.

With the exception of the backpack carrying student or the short lived fanny pack craze in the 8o’s, men in this culture tend to carry everything they need in their pockets. Perhaps there is, dare I say, some wisdom in that? Is it gross materialism on my part or could it be obsession with a girl scout-like preparedness that keeps this albatross around my shoulder? Should I become a minimalist? Lead a more ascetic lifestyle? Carry a wallet in my back pocket… maybe a comb?

Could I survive such a drastic mind shift?

You know, better yet, think I’ll go shopping tomorrow for a bigger purse with more pockets!

……………………………………………………….

Once again, I’ve lazily reposted a very early post. It seems to fit this week’s theme nicely, so why fight it, eh?

This was too funny! I used to go through that. Do you know I never, ever carry a purse? I have a change purse type thingy that goes into my pocket, keys in the other pocket. I can’t stand to be tied down to anything hanging off of me. Oh, once in a while I use one of those tiny shoulder wallet sized purses, but only if I’m slightly dressed up and we’re going someplace where I may need to touch up my face. (Dressed up for me means wearing my CLEANEST Chucks!)God, I used to be sooooo feminine and girly. Anyhoodle, this gave me a great laugh. Imagine the time you’re taking out of your precious life to go through this day after day. I’d say you’ve got some serious thinking to do missy.
    😀 XXX

  2. sketched out Says:

Oh man, you said a mouthful Lolo! I just may need professional help, hee hee… sigh.

  3. tom barrett Says:

Sounds like you need one of those Buxton Over the Shoulder Organizers. You know… you can find your stuff even with a blindfold on! 😛

    Ahhhh… it’s great to be a man!

  4. aaronpocock Says:

What a fantastic sense of humour you’ve got Linda!
The words are as great as the pic. Well done, Aaron.

  5. kate Says:

haha that purse sounds like mine.
my husband will sift through it from time to time trying to find gum or spare change and get mad when all he finds is gum wrappers and … everything else except what he wants. 🙂

  6. Bobo's slave Says:

Heehee, I can see you carry a bunny with you!
    Very dramatic words and illustration!

  7. Vickie Says:

A large well stocked purse can get you through any unexpected situation. This reminds me of the movie, “One Fine Day” Michelle Phifer’s charater has a day of unfortunate situations many of which are solved by the contents of her mega-purse. Your depiction is hilarious.

  8. Hhheeeeyyyy…wuddya doin diggin thru my purse…

  9. Bella Sinclair Says:

That’s hilarious! One of these days, you’re going to pull out that one thing that’s desperately needed but no one has. Maybe you’ll pull a MacGyver and save the world. Whatever it is, someday, your husband will appreciate you and your enormous purse!

  10. Jess Says:

I LOve this! A half eaten sandwich and a rabbit – hehe! Brilliant.

  11. carli Says:

I love it! I too carry a huge overflowing purse. I’ve tried a smaller one. now I have a tiny overflowing purse stuffed inside my big one.

  12. kathyhare Says:

brilliant drawing Linda, I’m the same it takes me ages to find anything in my bag..

  13. Mary Says:

Very funny sketch and writing! Even though I carry a very small purse….can’t stand the weight and the mess of a big one….I can remember going through all of that once upon a time. It’s amazing what we THINK we need to have with us at all times.

  14. emily Says:

hihi… I have a guy pal who does that except with his pant pockets… I swear (and I am not insinuating anything kinky) but it’s like magic the things he can pull out of those tiny pockets! Some men could use a purse!
hihi… naturally I just adored the bunny being tossed out… sigh!

  15. Hey that sounds like my purse Linda!
Only, you know what I added? A purse light!! And guess what? Still can’t find anything!
It’s just one more item to add to it’s weight.
Then recently I threw a diaper and some animal crackers into the heap.
No not for me!! I’ll be there soon enough and then Liv can carry mine in her bag!
    Great post Girl!
You touch on the familiar in all of us!

  16. Mary Beth Says:

That sounds like the magic purse from One Fine Day:) The perfect bag has to be big enough to hold a book (I’m okay with paperbacks). Vera Bradley has great bags because she has pockets all over the place. I need one for my phone and one for keys and one for my ipod and one for my aspirin – you can see how it goes.

  17. artseafartsea Says:

    Hilarious! And so true. LOL.

  18. dot Says:

great purse exposition! and really cute drawing… my purse can be like that too.

  19. indigene Says:

  20. Nancy Lefko Says:

you just crack me up !! …the bunny and the kitchen sink too ?? I think it may be time for an intervention….

  21. adi Says:

    hehehe!
uncanny, i keep rabbits in my purse too….

  22. Gaia Says:

This gave me such a good laugh!!!

Since I’ve been much of a tom-boy all my life, I never really had fancy purses. On my pre-baby life I used to have a set of super small “thingies”, to carry around just keys, money, walkman (I’m no i-pod girl)
Now I have a set of huge “things”, a cross between a purse and a backpack, to carry around all sorts of things… but even though I love them greatly, I swear I’ve never ever carried around a bunny! LOL

  23. Faruffa Says:

Super super fun, I’m crazy for your illus!!!
I love how you catch the humorous side of life, and how you translate it in wonderful images … I’m so glad I met you :o)

  24. Kathy Says:

I can so much relate to your post – recently, I’ve acquired a very long keyring pendant, that has made finding the keys in my purse amazingly easy 😉 But I still think that the fashion industry should create women’s jackets with some more pockets, just to have a choice…

    🙂

  25. erin Says:

hee, hee, I used to be the same way. I’d leave the house carrying, well, the entire contents of the house with me, just in case. After an injury and a stern warning from my doc I’m reformed, sort of, I now leave the bunny at home.

  26. Sandra Says:

Love this. It is perfect for the topic, one of my favourite things is cleaning out my bag and I am always surprised by what I find in there.

  27. AxL Says:

On the other hand, there is a certain freedom to carrying all of your material belongings about your person. If you can be mobile and feel at home at the same time means you’re the ultimate adventurer. From then on, the more you shed the richer your adventure. Though, I’m afraid the bunny is indispensable.

  28. AxL Says:

And I forgot to say I really like your drawings.

  29. Angela Says:

I try to keep the most stuff in the smallest space possible. I’m all about the extra pockets and compartments, so everything can live in it’s own space. 😛

    I love your sketch!!

  30. enigma Says:

oh, this is funny! nice drawing!

  31. conniemartin Says:

Loved this! I suggest a U-Haul. We travel in a motor home (RV) which is another possibility.

  32. valgalart Says:

Wonderful Linda! You need someone to carry your bag 🙂

  33. Solvere volo Says:

    LOL Just like my bag!

  34. It’s the girl version of George Costanza’s wallet, very cool and funny.

  35. Ellen Says:

    Excellent take on the topic!!!!!!

  36. kim Says:

I never carry a purse either. Hate the darn things. I would much rather put my credit card in my pocket and be off.
