HoHoDooDa 2019 Day 1

December 1, 2019

HoHoDooDa hornamint 2019

Oh hey!

Announcing (last minute, as is tradition) the beginning of HoHoDooDa 2019 (or Holiday Doodle A Day!)

If this tiny reindeer looks familiar, it may be because I’ve posted him in the past and he’s been nominated as spokes-critter for this year. Oh, and I realize they’re actually antlers, but antler-ments didn’t really work.

So, what is HoHoDooDa?

Why, thanks for asking.

Back in December 2011, in order to create a shot of creative, mojo-inducing stress to the already jam packed holidays, my fellow illustrator pals, the talented Marion Eldridge and Laura Jacobson along with myself, engaged in a month-long sketch-a-thon. We dubbed it HoHoDooDa, short for Holiday Doodle a Day (maybe not that much shorter.) We did our best to create a holiday-themed drawing a day… or even every other day… or as often as humanly possible, from December 1 to December 31.

Fast forward to 2019 where this November has been a challenging month for all of us. So now, what with the holidays and all, it probably seems crazy to add this challenge to the mix. There may be some gnashing of teeth and it may all end in tears but in the end I’m pretty sure a good time will be had. It may even be as rewarding as it was in years past. So, what the actual hell? Doin’ it again this year! Who’s with me?

Hello? What’s that…? Bueller…?

Alright, it is entirely possible I may be the only participant this year, but anyone who would like to join in is more than welcome, no matter what winter holiday you celebrate! Don’t let the HoHo throw you. This is an all-the-winter-holidays doodle challenge!

Rules for HoHoDooDa:

“What are the rules for HoHoDooDa?” You may ask…

1. THERE ARE NO RULES! NO SIGN UP! NO REGISTRATION! NO GIVEAWAYS OR GUEST POSTERS!  No regulations, themes, daily words, Facebook pages or anything else resembling organization. Just lots of holiday doodling, maybe some commenting back and forth amongst doodlers and hopefully lots of inspiration and craft honing!

HoHoDooDa Doodlers are scoff-laws and Mavricks! (Well the truth is, I’m just not that organized.) The only code we live by this month is Doodle! Doodle! Doodle and doodle some more, every day from December 1 to December 31, or at least try to.

You may not Doodle every single day, but by golly you will have tried and you’ll have more doodles in your sketchbook at the end of December than you might have otherwise.

So, there’s that!

2. If you post to your blog it helps if you tag your illustrations HoHoDooDa 2017 or create a HoHoDooDa category.

If you are posting to Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram it helps to add #HoHoDooDa2019 and/or #HoHoDooDa

3. Smile, this is fun!

Doodle on my fellow HoHoDooDa Doodlers, (should there be any!)

SkADaMo 2019 Day 1

November 1, 2019

SkADaMo 2019 Prompts

Happy November, everyone!

As is usually the case, I am announcing the SkADaMo sketch challenge at the very last minute. Why mess with tradition, right?

I started this challenge back in 2011 as more of a personal challenge and gave it the name SkADaMo as a loving spoof on all the many acronyms for November challenges, such as NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month)NaBloPoMo (National Blog Posting Month) and, what used to be a November challenge PiBoIdMo (Picture Book Idea Month), now Storystorm, which now takes place in January.

I even jokingly made badges to display as the one and only participant. But lo and behold, several other wonderful artists, doodlers and sketchers threw their hats, or pencils into the mix.

So please feel free to join in again or for the first time this year.

SKADAMO RULES:

“What are the rules?” You may ask.

1. THERE ARE NO RULES. NO SIGN UP. NO REGISTRATION. NO GIVEAWAYS OR GUEST POSTERS.  No regulations, themes, websites or anything else resembling organization.  Just lots of sketching, camaraderie and hopefully a ton of inspiration and craft honing! Oh, I did throw together a list of prompts this year, as you may have noticed above. Please use them if you have a mind to.

SkADaMoers are scoff-laws and mavericks! (Actually, the truth is I’m just not that organized. Did I mention that?) The only code we live by this month is SKETCH! SKETCH! SKETCH! Sketch everyday from November 1 to November 30, or at least try to.

Even if you’re unable to sketch every single day, by golly you will have tried and you’ll have more sketches in your sketchbook at the end of November than you might have otherwise. So, there’s that!

2. Go ahead and hasthtag #SkADaMo and/or #SkADaMo2019 to whatever blog or social media platform you are using to post your wonderful sketches.

3. Grab one of these badges, below, if you’d like and use it as you see fit.

4. Most important rule of all… Enjoy! This is fun!

Sketch on my fellow SkADaMoers, (should there be any besides myself this year!)

SkADaMo 2016

November 1, 2016

skadamo-2016-post-lemur-mainI realize I waited until the very last minute to get things started this year. But flying by the seat of the pants is SkADaMo tradition, afterall!

Sooooo, it’s November First! That means all the cool challenges are upon us.

There’s NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month)

NaBloPoMo (National Blog Posting Month) and

PiBoIdMo (Picture Book Idea Month), of which I am a usually participant of but I understand it will be moving to January this year. Wouldn’t miss it for the world!

There are probably a bunch more, but suffice it to say, November is a busy month for some. So now, since 2011, SkADaMo “Sketch a Day Month” has also been thrown into the mix. (That is, every year since, except for 2015, which was a difficult November, but we forge ahead and start anew! )

I really started SkADaMo as a personal challenge and gave it the name as a bit of a spoof on all the other November challenges. I even jokingly made a badge, thinking I would be the only participant. But lo and behold, several other wonderful artists, doodlers and sketchers threw their hats, or pencils into the mix.

So if anyone wants to join in this year, they are more than welcome and very much encouraged to grab this badge, off to the side here and start sketching.

(Oh, by the way, I count this badge as my first sketch, so neener neener!) We play it fast and loose over here at SkADaMo!

2. In the past I kept a running list of participants right here on my blog. This year, however, if you post your sketches or links to your blog on facebook, twitter, instagram, tumblr, flickr or pinterest, why not go ahead and hasthtag it with #SkADaMo. I believe this would be a much more efficient way to keep track and follow fellow SkADaMo participants.

Oh, and did I mention, I’m not very organized?

3. Go ahead and grab this small badge if you’d like and use it as you see fit, on your blog or what have you.

4. Most important rule of all… SMILE! This is fun!
